Silence for Reflection

Prayers:   Collect and Lord’s Prayer

Silent Prayer

·                      The congregation remains as long as they desire for prayer and meditation.

·                      The Pastor leaves in silence.

·                      There is no postlude or benediction as on Maundy Thursday.  The Good Friday Liturgy is to be understood as part of the three-day celebration of the cross and resurrection that reaches its climax on Easter.

·                      The congregation returns on Easter Sunday for the joyous and festive celebration of the Holy Communion and the Resurrection.

·                      The Church is prepared for Easter Sunday with white paraments and flowers.

WHY IS THE ALTAR STRIPPED FOR GOOD FRIDAY?

According to the Lutheran Book of Worship stripping the altar is symbolic of Jesus’ “Humiliation at the soldiers’ hands”.  The altar was stripped at the close of the Communion Service on MaundyThursday as Psalm 22, a Psalm of Passion, was read.
